Summer Number Clip Cards Build Counting Practice Into Play
Twenty printable cards help preschoolers count summer pictures, match numbers from 1 to 10 and practice using clothespins.

Counting practice can feel more inviting when children get to handle the materials, look for familiar pictures and make a choice on each card. These summer number clip cards combine all three: children count a group of seasonal images, choose the matching numeral and attach a clothespin to mark their answer.
The activity is designed for preschoolers, but it can also suit children who are beginning to work on counting and number recognition. Use it at home, in a preschool setting or as a short activity alongside another lesson. The cards let you keep the same basic routine while changing the pictures and making summer practice feel fresh.

What children do with the cards
Each card shows a group of pictures and three numbers. The child counts the images, decides which number matches the total and clips a clothespin onto that choice. Pointing to each picture as they count can help children keep track of where they are and avoid skipping or counting an image twice.
That simple sequence brings together several kinds of practice. Children connect a quantity they can see with a written numeral, then use their fingers to open and release the clothespin. The clothespin adds a hands-on step, while the counting task gives the activity a clear goal.
The printable includes 20 cards covering numbers 1 through 10. Each number appears on two cards, paired with different summer pictures. The illustrations include sunshine, flip-flops, beach balls, seashells, ice cream cones and popsicles, among other seasonal images.
The download contains 10 PDF pages. It includes all 20 cards in color and the same 20 cards in black and white, so you can choose the version that works for your printer and materials. The black-and-white pages can also be colored by children before the cards are used.

Get the cards ready
Set aside the printable, paper or cardstock, scissors and clothespins. A laminator is optional. Regular paper is enough to try the activity, while cardstock can make the cards sturdier for repeated handling.
- Choose and print a version. Print the color pages or the black-and-white pages, depending on what you have available and how you want children to use them.
- Cut out the cards. Separate each card along its outline. If you plan to laminate them, cut them apart first.
- Laminate if useful. After laminating, trim around each card while leaving a small sealed border. This can help the cards hold up when they are used by several children or saved for another season.
- Set out the clothespins. Put the cards and pins in a basket or bag so the activity is easy to bring to a table or learning area.
Choose clothespins that your child can squeeze and open. Regular and mini clothespins are both options; the right size depends on what feels manageable for the child using them. A child who is still getting used to the pinching motion can work on that movement with help before trying to mark a card independently.

Adjust the activity to your child
Put out a few cards at a time instead of presenting the full set. If your child is just starting to count, begin with cards showing smaller groups. As counting becomes more familiar, bring in more cards and higher numbers.
Try a shared first round: choose a card, point to each picture together and say the count aloud. Then look at the three number choices and talk through which numeral represents the group. Your child can place the clothespin, or you can help with the squeezing while they focus on counting and choosing.
As the routine becomes familiar, let your child pick a card and work through the steps more independently. If the answer is uncertain, count the pictures again together rather than rushing to mark a choice. The repeated counting gives children another chance to connect the group with the correct numeral.
The cards can fit into a summer preschool math center, homeschool practice, kindergarten counting review or a quiet activity while an older sibling works on a lesson. They can also offer an indoor option on a hot or rainy day. For a short session, a handful of cards may be plenty; there’s no need to finish the whole set at once.
